A government watchdog plans to review how the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a Labor Department agency, compiles and reports some of the highest-profile economic data in the U.S., according to the Associated Press.

The news comes just days after the agency revised its estimate of the number of jobs sharply downward.

A spokesperson for the department’s Office of the Inspector General said this week that it is launching a review of “the challenges that Bureau of Labor Statistics encounters collecting and reporting closely watched economic data.”

The audit’s primary areas of focus will be the agency’s reports on inflation and employment, considered definitive measures of those aspects of the U.S. economy.
