Dodge County is ground zero for the first dairy herd that has contracted bird flu, Wisconsin Public Radio reports.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced on Sunday that cow’s milk from a Dodge County farm tested positive for the virus.
The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory found the first milk sample to test positive for the virus on Thursday before a second positive test on Friday. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed both results.
Pasteurization does kill the virus, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the USDA are urging farmers to practice better biosecurity protocols and stricter hygiene practices.
A Jefferson County poultry farm had to kill 3 million birds in September due to the flu.
