Dane County’s first renewable energy biogas unloading station, a $5.5 million injection port, started operations as part of a larger $29 million project to clean and deliver methane from the Dane County landfill at 7102 US-12. The gas will be sold as compressed natural gas at Kwik Trip stations, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport.

The station has the capacity to unload 10 trailers per day, each holding the equivalent of 2,400 to 3,000 gallons of gasoline. Although it does produce carbon dioxide when burned, biogas fuel offsets the use of fossil fuels and keeps methane from escaping into the atmosphere.

In related news, the recently-released Dane County Climate Action Plan called for “deep decarbonization” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 45 percent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The plan aims to increase alternative sources of energy and farming practices that capture more carbon.
