Proposed legislation would allow Wisconsin residents to subscribe to privately developed small solar projects on brownfields, commercial rooftops or underused farmland, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Senate Bill 559 and Assembly Bill 493 would allow for subscribing to the community solar facilities. Subscribers would receive credits on their electric bill for power generated by the solar panels.
On one side of the bill, environmentalists are supportive of the renewable energy the project would provide. Those who oppose the bill include some of the state’s utility companies, who control much of the state’s power grid.
A similar proposal has failed in the last two legislative sessions.
