Bikes for Kids Wisconsin, a nonprofit working to increase the use of bicycle-based transportation for underserved communities, is launching a new educational program, Pedals and Pixels.
Pedals and Pixels is a collaborative summer workshop led in partnership with Black Girl Magic Educational Services and facilitated by Heather Von Oesen Dean of Creative Across the Curriculum. The program is geared toward addressing racial and gender-based inequities in cycling.
Ten middle school girls are participating in creative writing lessons, photography lessons and guided bike rides throughout the summer. Each girl receives a bicycle, a digital camera and a journal as part of the program. They will document their experiences of what their bikes meant to them over the summer through creative writing and photography.
The girls’ works will be on display at Bikes for Kids Wisconsin’s first annual Pedals and Pixels Showcase Gallery Event on Aug. 20 at the Madison Youth Arts Center (MYArts), 1055 E. Mifflin St., from 6-8 p.m.
The Showcase Gallery Event will be free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available.
