President Joe Biden has signed the Social Security Fairness Act, increasing benefits for nearly 3 million public employees, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers, according to the Associated Press. The law eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, which had reduced Social Security payments for those receiving state or local government pensions.

The change addresses long-standing disparities but adds strain to Social Security Trust Funds, already projected to become insolvent by 2035. The Congressional Budget Office estimates monthly payments will rise significantly by December 2025: an average of $360 for those affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision, $700 for 380,000 beneficiaries relying on spousal benefits, and $1,190 for 390,000 surviving spouses. Payments will also increase with cost-of-living adjustments.

The adjustments are retroactive to January 2024, though how back payments will be processed remains unclear. Social Security, operating with its lowest staffing levels in over 50 years, faces additional administrative challenges.

Advocates hail the law as a step toward fairness, but critics warn it will accelerate Social Security’s insolvency by about six months. Social Security serves 72.5 million Americans, and its future remains a critical political issue.
