U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that President Biden’s 2022 budget includes $80 million for the construction of the Madison East-West bus rapid transit (BRT) system. The project is one of 25 rail, BRT, and streetcar projects in 12 states recommended for a share of $2.5 billion in FTA competitive funding. These projects are expected to create hundreds of construction and operations-related jobs. The Madison East-West BRT will provide fast, reliable bus service for residents in a key 15.5-mile corridor running along East Washington Avenue, around the State Capitol building, through downtown Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus, and continuing west on University Avenue to the West Transfer Point or West Towne Mall. The project includes 27 stations, 8.2 miles of exclusive bus lanes, the purchase of 41 buses, and upgrades to the existing bus maintenance facility.
