As a result of ballooning costs related to the expansion of I-39/90 from the state line to the Wisconsin Dells, the DOT has canceled plans to expand the interstate in Dane County, including reconstruction of the Beltline interchange.

According to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal, the entire highway project, which began in 2015, included widening the road to three lanes in either direction between the state line and Madison.

That work, including reconstruction of the Beltline interchange, was originally projected to cost $715 million but has more than doubled to $1.6 billion.

Work on the Beltline interchange is now in limbo.
