The nonprofit Bayview Foundation will soon be launching a $50 million redevelopment of a 4.6-acre community now holding 102 obsolete townhouses, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The downtown community bordered by South Park Street, Regent Street, and West Washington Avenue will be replaced by a four-story, 48-unit apartment building, a three-story, 25-unit apartment building, and eight two-story townhouses with a total of 57 units. The new development will have the same low-income focus, but will allow more seniors to stay in the neighborhood, and the population density will increase 80% from 277 to 500 residents.
The existing community center will be expanded to 11,000 square feet. Additionally, the community will hold a full-sized basketball court, playground, community gardens, a grassy common area, pavilion, and other gathering spaces. Construction will begin this spring even though the Bayview Foundation will still need to privately raise another $4 million to complete the project.
