Banks obligated to use relief checks for garnishment

Banks must follow legal court orders regarding garnishments, and the federal government’s economic impact payments are included in these laws, according to a statement from the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA).

The WBA has joined the American Bankers Association to urge Congress and the administration to designate that stimulus checks being sent to taxpayers not be eligible for garnishment.

Banks will be obligated to follow the laws and legal court orders until an exception is made.
