As concern grows over alcohol-related violence in downtown Madison, three city departments are suggesting late-night food carts be eliminated by 2023, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.

A draft proposal from the Madison Police Department, Madison’s Economic Development division, and the city’s attorney office calls for a five-year phase-out of the carts, which have licenses to sell food between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Thursday through Saturday nights.

City officials are concerned that the availability of food late into the evening is allowing people to congregate after bar time.
