Baked Wings & Things on State Street in Madison is giving away 50 free lunches each day SNAP is unavailable, while Ollie’s is offering a pay-what-you-can service on Tuesday through Thursday, according to the restaurant’s social media post and a Channel 3000 report, respectively.
SNAP benefits won’t be funded in November due to the federal government shutdown. Ollie’s will run the promotion until SNAP benefits are restored and is available for dine-in customers. The list of what can be ordered includes smoked tofu with mashed potatoes and herbed carrots, roast chicken with the same sides, butter noodles and mac and cheese.
Baked Wings & Things will hand out lunches at noon beginning Saturday on a first-come, first-served basis. Each lunch will include a sandwich, fruit, chips, a granola bar and water.
“We’ve been heartbroken watching what’s been happening with SNAP benefits lately,” Baked Wings & Things said on social media. “So many of our neighbors rely on that support to put food on the table, and to see families struggling just to eat is something we can’t ignore.”
