Just prior to an explosion that caused a fire and a power outage, American Transmission Co. had identified a potential mechanical issue at a downtown substation that might have caused the blast, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal.

ATC, which owns the electrical equipment at the Madison Gas & Electric substation, said in a written statement that during routine inspections, it had identified a potential problem last week, just before the explosion that left 13,000 without power on a day with 90-degree temperatures.

Workers identified a component that required additional review, which was scheduled for this week. ATC continues to investigate the explosion.
