Madison’s first aquaponics venture, The Cube Farm, is set to open this fall at 1444 E. Washington Ave. below the Art In gallery and artists’ studios, according to the Cap Times.
Aquaponics is a system that relies on fish waste to sustain edible plants such as lettuce, kale, and tomatoes. Aquaponics combines hydroponics, or growing plants without soil, with fish farming, or aquaculture. The integrated system of tanks and plants circulates nutrient-rich water from fish tanks toward plants that grow in long rafts floating in the water.
The Cube Farm will be operated by three partners, Kevin Spaulding and Craig Spaulding, brothers with a background at the former downtown restaurant Café Montmartre, and Kevin’s girlfriend, Pam Prince, who owns a horse farm in Deerfield.
