Citing a difficult and “volatile” individual market, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has decided to pull out of the federal health care exchange in Wisconsin, according to a media reports.

The insurance provider offered plans in 44 counties, primarily in northern and eastern parts of the state. Anthem’s decision affects about 18,500 Wisconsin members whose coverage will now end Dec. 31, 2017.

In 2018, Anthem will offer just one off-exchange medical plan, in Menominee County, although about 4,500 people on grandfathered plans will be unaffected by the company’s latest decision.

Fifteen insurers remain on the federal health insurance exchange in Wisconsin, which is more than any other state, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
