Analysis: Wisconsin has more bankruptcies than average

A new study by Smartest Dollar looking at which U.S. states have the most bankruptcies found that Wisconsin reported 1,598 bankruptcies per million residents during the study period, compared to 1,267 nationally. Out of all states, Wisconsin had the 14th most bankruptcies per capita in 2021. Key findings from the analysis include:   

Wisconsin data: 

  • Business bankruptcies per million residents (2021): 33; 
  • Non-business bankruptcies per million residents (2021): 1,565; 
  • Average credit score (2021): 735; and 
  • Unemployment rate (2020): 3.6%. 

U.S. data: 

  • Business bankruptcies per million residents (2021): 44; 
  • Non-business bankruptcies per million residents (2021): 1,223; 
  • Average credit score (2021): 714; and 
  • Unemployment rate (2020): 5.4%.
