Amtrak’s planned Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago intercity passenger service is an effort to provide more reliable rail service, according to a report from the La Crosse Tribune.

Service is set to begin in 2024 or sooner, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website. The train will run from Chicago to the Twin Cities on existing tracks used by Amtrak’s Empire Builder and will replace and extend one of the seven Hiawatha services between Milwaukee and Chicago.

The Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago second train is expected to serve more than 124,000 riders in its first year of service.
