Amtrak announced Wednesday that later this month it will add a second train serving communities between the Twin Cities and Chicago, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The Borealis trains will offer a second daily service through La Crosse, Tomah, and Winona, Minnesota, following the route of Amtrak’s Empire Builder starting May 21.
The route includes eight stations in Wisconsin. The new service aims to make travel between the three states easier, reduce the need for travelers to drive, and ensure more sustainable travel. It is anticipated to increase tourism for La Crosse and Winona.
The Borealis trains are scheduled to depart from St. Paul at 11:50 a.m., arriving in Chicago by 7:14 p.m., and depart Chicago at 11:05 a.m. for a 6:29 p.m. arrival in St. Paul. Discounted fares are available for children ages 2–12, veterans, seniors, military personnel and families, and others.
