In 2016, American Family Insurance paid out a total of $879 million in storm damage claims across the country, a 20.4% increase over claims filed in 2015 ($730 million).
While the increase is significant, the Madison-based insurance company had budgeted for $1.1 billion in claims across its 19-state service area.
The company also reported that it had 10.2 million active policies in 2016, the first time ever it surpassed 10 million.
