Amazon is laying off 16,000 workers in its latest round of job cuts, its second in three months.
The company said it will use generative AI to replace the workers, the Associated Press reports.
“Some of you might ask if this is the beginning of a new rhythm — where we announce broad reductions every few months. That’s not our plan,” Beth Galetti, a senior vice president at Amazon, said in a statement. “But just as we always have, every team will continue to evaluate the ownership, speed and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate. That’s never been more important than it is today in a world that’s changing faster than ever.”
Amazon made a round of layoffs in October, letting 14,000 workers go.
The company also announced it will close most of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh locations as it focuses on its grocery chain, Whole Foods Market.
Some of the stores will be converted into Whole Foods locations.
