The Madison Plan Commission on Jan. 27 denied a portion of Amazon’s request to locate a package delivery center on Milwaukee Street.

The Commission denied a plan for more parking and a storm management plan, saying the property, which actually entails two lots, is near a wetland area, according to a Wisconsin State Journal update.

The vote could slow but may not stop Amazon’s plans.

Amazon submitted plans to the city of Madison that would convert an east side warehouse into a package delivery center for the international online retailer.

The warehouse, at 3630 Milwaukee St., was once the site of a 228,100-square-foot distribution facility for Swiss Colony. To accommodate parking for 500 delivery vans and 204 stalls for employees, Amazon would raze about half the building. The remaining space would be remodeled into the 116,242-square-foot delivery center.

Inventory would be shipped from other Amazon fulfillment centers and packages would be loaded into local delivery vehicles and personal automobiles driven by independent contractors.

While just over 200 parking stalls would be dedicated to employees, no specific job counts were provided.
