Luna’s Groceries may finally be the oasis needed in the food desert that has long plagued the Allied Drive neighborhood off Verona Road.
The Madison City Council approved a $158,000 grant through the Healthy Retail Access program to convert an existing 2,240-square-foot space into a much-needed food store at 2030 Red Arrow Trail.
According to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal, Mariam Maldonado, a neighborhood resident, will own the store.
The area has gone without a neighborhood grocery store within walking distance since 2009 when Cub Foods closed.
