Alliant Energy in 2028 will convert its coal-burning power plant in Sheboygan County into a natural gas plant, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. The announcement pushes back the original plan for the plant to come offline in 2025 — the second time recently that Alliant has delayed the Edgewater Generating Station’s retirement, first planned for 2022.
The utility plans to help retain the workforce at the plant and said continuing the use of coal after 2025 will help maintain electricity capacity, averting around $60 million in customer costs through 2030.
The plant’s conversion to natural gas reportedly still requires regulators’ approval. Alliant is set to finish extending a gas pipeline to the area in 2027.
Alliant has also received approval to build a 99-MW battery storage system in Sheboygan able to store energy sufficient to power over 100,000 Wisconsin homes for four hours.
