Madison-based Alliant Energy Corp.’s third quarter earnings resulting from utilities and corporate services from continuing operations were $1.56 per share compared to $1.45 per share a year ago. The increase resulted from lower expenses for purchasing power and lower income tax expense at the company’s Iowa utility. Total revenue was down, from $887.6 million last year to $866.6 million this year, due to weather. As a result, the company is upping its 2013 earnings guidance to a $3.15- to $3.30-per-share range, up from a range of $2.95 to $3.25 per share. Alliant is the parent of Wisconsin Power and Light in Madison and Interstate Power and Light in Iowa.
Meanwhile, Madison Gas & Electric also saw increases for the quarter ending Sept. 30, posting earnings of $24.4 million ($1.05/share) compared to $23.6 million ($1.02/share) for the same period last year. The company experienced higher gas sales volumes from customers in the third quarter.
