Madison-based Virent has sent 100 gallons of its bio-based jet fuel to the Air Force Research Laboratory for testing. Virent produces jet and diesel fuels made from 100% renewable plant sugars. According to a release, the Air Force will be testing the fuel against required standards for qualification and approval of new aviation turbine fuels. Virent’s jet fuel was produced at a new demonstration plant in Madison that was made possible by a $1.5 million award in 2011 from the FAA and the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.
