Dane County Executive Melissa Agard released the following statement in support of the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling on the 1849 abortion law:

“The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the 176‑year‑old abortion ban marks a watershed moment for reproductive freedom in our state. I welcome (the) ruling as a major victory for basic rights and health care access. Here in Dane County, this is a critical affirmation of our efforts to remain a stronghold for high-quality, compassionate reproductive health services.”

Agard said the court’s decision upholds the principle that every person has the autonomy to make deeply personal medical decisions in consultation with their health care provider. She added, “We must now harness this momentum to push forward and support state leaders, legislative allies, and community advocates working to codify explicit protections for reproductive health care.”
