Agard gathers with workers, union leaders today to observe Workers Memorial Day

The South Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO on Monday, April 28, will observe Workers Memorial Day with an event to remember those who have suffered and died on the job, and to organize the fight for safe jobs. Workers, union leaders and Dane County Executive Melissa Agard will gather on the Madison Labor Temple grounds at 1602 S. Park St. at 10:15 a.m.

The event will open with a welcome by Kevin Gundlach, president of the South Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; an invocation by State Rep. Shelia Stubbs; and a statement from U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan.

Additional speakers will include:

  • Tracey Griffith, executive director of the Building Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin;

  • David Ortiz Whittingham, construction organizer of Worker Justice Wisconsin;

  • Mike Jones, president of Madison Teachers Inc.;

  • Ben Gruber, state of Wisconsin game warden and president of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Local 1215;

  • Pat Raes, president of SEIU Wisconsin;

  • William Townsend, president of American Federation of Government Employees Local 1732;

  • Melissa Agard, Dane County executive; and

  • U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
