The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has cautioned the 611 municipal water systems in the state to secure the computerized control systems of water system monitoring, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal.

The warning comes after hackers gained access to a control system at a water treatment plant in Oldsmar, Florida, and increased the supply levels of lye to the process. The alteration was caught before the chemical could poison the water supply. However, the act prompted Wisconsin officials to warn municipalities to upgrade their cybersecurity.
