A fresh look for In Business Madison

The companies, people and issues shaping business in Madison and the Capital Region.

As reporter Louis Livingston-Garcia put together this month’s cover story on planning for the future of the Dane County Regional Airport, I was struck by the fact that the airport hasn’t had a master plan since 1993, the year I graduated from high school.

That was a while ago. At the time, there was a new thing called email that everyone was excited about.

Coincidentally, it’s been several decades since In Business Madison significantly refreshed its nameplate and logo.

The nameplate (also called a flag) is the title of the publication that appears on its front cover, and is also used in the magazine’s branding across online platforms and at events.

We’re excited about the more modern look and feel. Regional publisher Dave Neill guided the process, believing the word “Madison” needed to be featured prominently in the nameplate to make it clear that we cover business in this city. The previous design did not reference Madison.

Graphic designer Ellen Cameron created the image of the state Capitol that accompanies the nameplate. She cleverly added two swooping lines underneath the icon, calling to mind lakes Mendota and Monona and the building’s location between the two on the isthmus.

The addition of “Wisconsin’s Capital Region” in smaller font indicates the nine counties we cover.

We gave our social media followers and newsletter subscribers a sneak peek of the new look a few weeks ago (and yes, that’s your cue to follow us on Instagram @ibmadison or LinkedIn, and sign up for our newsletters using the magazine’s QR code on page 1).

The new branding isn’t the only change in this issue. We’re also debuting design updates to our page layout. We’re grateful to our sister publication, Insight on Business — which covers business in the Northeast Wisconsin region — for the inspiration. Our editorial teams are exploring future collaborations as well.

Readers might notice updated fonts and new approaches to photo layouts and the design may evolve further as we tweak the look and feel. As you explore the issue, know that we welcome any feedback! My email is katie.dean@ibmadison.com.

This month, in addition to Livingston-Garcia’s thorough story on what’s next for the airport, reporter Brittney Kenaston writes about Agrace’s innovative plans for caring for patients with dementia. Its Dementia Village approach is more community-based than institutional. The idea has roots overseas in the Netherlands.

And senior writer Joe Vanden Plas reports from In Business Madison’s annual Real Estate & Construction Symposium. The February event featured two lively panel discussions focused on the shortage of housing and the abundance of data centers. Thanks for reading!
