A new apartment complex on West Wilson Street would have 320 units but no parking, the Cap Times reports.
It is set for a yes or no vote by the end of the year by the Madison Plan Commission. The 16-story development would replace an existing apartment building and be filled with “micro” units.
Developer Randy Alexander of Torque Companies is developing the project as a way to create more affordable housing, he said during a Nov. 3 meeting with the Madison Plan Commission. He said the lack of parking spots is due to a large number of people who don’t own a car, want one or can’t afford one.
Alexander said the small units and no parking would create rents that are 30% lower than comparable housing in downtown Madison.
A host of questions were raised at the meeting, however, mostly with parking, bicycle access and even pedestrian access to the building.
The Plan Commission is scheduled to discuss the apartment proposal at its Dec. 1 virtual meeting. If passed, it would move to the City Council for approval.
