One of the nation’s largest farmer-owned cooperatives is proposing a $700 million soybean processing facility in Evansville, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The CHS Inc. project would be the most extensive development in city history, sitting on 300 acres of farmland on the city’s east side at highways M and 14.
The facility would have the capacity to process 70 million bushels of soybeans into oil and meal annually. Wisconsin’s 2022 soybean harvest amounted to around 116 million bushels.
Construction could begin this spring, pending approvals, and the plant could open as early as 2026. The facility would employ up to 90 people and operate 24 hours, seven days per week. It would bring 45 trucks into the city each day and also be serviced by rail, requiring a large oval spur off the Union Pacific tracks.
