Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Boston-based life sciences company, is laying off 69 people in Middleton, WKOW reported.

The company is consolidating its US Bioanalytical laboratory operations into its Richmond, Virginia, facility, affecting Middleton positions, as Middleton has both bioanalytical and Good Manufacturing Practice labs.

According to WKOW, the layoffs will begin this fall and could continue through early next year.

“This decision reflects an effort to better align resources and expertise, streamline operations and support the long-term growth of our laboratory network. The change also enables additional capacity in Middleton to support the continued expansion of our Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratory operations, where several of the impacted colleagues will be transferring and which is the largest of Thermo Fisher’s operations in the city,” the company said in a statement sent to 27 News Wednesday.

Thermo Fisher will be closing its facility at 3230 Deming Way.

In 2024, Thermo Fisher expanded with a $58 million investment, and Gov. Tony Evers’ administration gave the company over $2 million in tax credits through 2026.

In February, two lease extensions totaling 233,694 square feet were made to keep Thermo Fisher Scientific located at Research Way in Middleton.

The two 20-year extensions were for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s PPD clinical research business.
