With a plan to vacate its downtown Madison campus by 2019, the Madison College District Board of Trustees asked five developers to return in March with more detailed plans. Madison College will lease the land, but give freedom to a developer to renovate, repurpose, or even raze the current building.

Of the 11 developers submitting proposals, the five finalists are Alexander Co. (Madison), Baum Revision Real Estate (Chicago), C.D. Smith & HKS Holdings (Fond du Lac/Milwaukee), Hovde Development (Madison), and Sherman Associates (Minneapolis).

Ideas range from nonprofit office space to mixes of apartments and affordable housing, a hotel, live/work space for artists, office, retail, restaurants, and one plan that even includes a public dog park.
