The city of Madison’s Landmarks Commission has blocked a 170-unit housing project that would have combined parcels at 302 S. Paterson St. and 826 Williamson St., according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The proposed $40 million project, located on a 1.8-acre site along the Capitol City Trail, would have included a building that was three stories facing Williamson Street and five stories facing the bike trail. The Landmarks Commission blocked a request to combine the parcels because the project would not fit the pattern of lot sizes for the Third Lake Ridge Historic District, where one of the parcels is located.
The Marquette Neighborhood Association unanimously supported the project but city Planning Division staff opposed the combination. In the end, the Landmarks Commission voted 4–2 to deny the application, but the decision could be appealed to the Madison City Council. Other configurations of the project, including historically sensitive design and separate structures on the lots, could be explored by the developer.
