UW–Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone is moving forward with the proposed layoffs of three dozen tenured branch campus faculty, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The move comes despite the Faculty Senate’s rejection of the plan last week.
The final decision will come from the UW Board of Regents, which for the first time will weigh a decade-old policy allowing universities to lay off faculty members due to financial difficulties or their programs being cut. The regents could consider the plan as early as next week at their August meeting in Madison.
Mone said in a letter to UW President Jay Rothman that the layoffs are necessary in light of UW–Milwaukee’s current financial realities, along with those of the UW system and other higher education institutions. UW–Milwaukee in the past year has eliminated a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall that played into UW’s overall $58 million budget deficit.
