Wisconsin’s fiscal year ended with a $579 million surplus on the books, largely because some agencies spent about $116 million less, according to reports.

The surplus was $126 million more than last year’s amount, and is the second highest in Gov. Scott Walker’s tenure. A surplus of $467 million was projected.

Putting it into perspective, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the $579 million would be enough to pay for just over half of the state’s annual contribution to the University of Wisconsin System, or enough to run Wisconsin’s operations for just under 13 days.
