Reconstruction of John Nolen Drive is set to begin next month, the Wisconsin State Journal reports, reducing one of Madison’s main thoroughfares from the Beltline to the Capitol, UW-Madison and more to one lane in each direction.
The partial closure is planned to last almost two years as the city undertakes a roughly $42 million overhaul of the aging causeway and nearby intersections.
The project, extending from South Broom Street to East Lakeside Street, will:

Replace six bridges and build three new ones;

Expand bike and pedestrian paths;

Improve the Lake Monona shoreline, planting all new trees; and

Rework the South Broom Street and North Shore Drive intersections.
Chris Petykowski, deputy city engineer, said work will start on the southbound side of John Nolen Drive and then move to the northbound side.
The southbound side of the causeway is expected to be reconstructed between November and next July, with intersection closures during this period lasting 50-60 days and sidewalk closures at the intersections for around 10 days.
The northbound side will be reconstructed around next July.
