Two Madison-area organizations are launching a campaign to pay off school meal debts in the city, according to WMTV15. The Madison Area Democratic Socialists of America and Freedom Inc. are collecting money online in an effort to clear a debt from MMSD students totaling $235,000.
The groups hope to create a long-term, systemic solution to ensure the meal debts do not reaccumulate.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools nationwide were able to offer free meals thanks to federal aid, and in the years since, several states have made free school meals permanently available.
