A $1 million project that will resurface the northern stretch of Midvale Boulevard between University Avenue and Mineral Point Road could see new bike lanes, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and the elimination of most street parking, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The project is set to begin in summer and run through early September, helping to align the road with city policies prioritizing bikes, buses, and pedestrians over parking and other vehicles.

According to Madison city staff, the road’s pavement is aging, and better safety measures are needed for cyclists and pedestrians. Current plans retain street parking only on the northbound stretch of Midvale Boulevard between Vernon Boulevard and University Avenue. There will be new pedestrian crosswalks at Hillcrest Drive, Regent Street, Vernon Boulevard, Heather Crest, and the entrance to Hilldale. Most of the road will include seven-foot bike lanes, which will narrow to five feet on the two blocks of remaining street parking.

The project designs are not yet finalized, and the city is gathering feedback on its current plans. It will present these to the city’s Transportation Commission in February.
