Madison will offer nearly 300 mental health beds with the early January addition of a 120-bed psychiatric hospital on the city’s far east side, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Owned by Acadia Healthcare, the Shorewood Behavioral Health facility will treat adolescents and adults with substance use, mood, and thought disorders, as well as senior patients with mild to moderate dementia.

The facility, under construction in the High Crossing development east of Interstate 39-90-94 and south of Highway 151, is set to open Jan. 7. It consists of a converted former American Family Insurance office building on the site and an added support services building. According to Acadia, similar facilities typically cost roughly $35 million–$80 million.

One wing of the hospital will open initially with 30 beds for adult patients. Additional beds will reportedly open later as needed.
