Madison City Council President Sabrina Madison will honor youth leaders for Juneteenth on June 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Madison will celebrate five young leaders and two adults to honor personal achievements and positive effects the group has had on the city.
“Black youth are already leading, creating change and helping shape the future of our city,” Madison said in a statement. “Too often, we wait until people are adults to recognize their brilliance, but I believe we should celebrate excellence while it is happening.”
The students were nominated by organizations including Rooted at Badger Rock Neighborhood Center, Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center, The House Inc., Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.
During the honoring resolution, Madison will also honor Julian Walters, the president of Eminent Development Corporation, and Annie Weatherby Flowers, for her decades of dedication to building and sustaining Madison’s Juneteenth celebration.
The public can attend the Juneteenth honoring resolution virtually or in person at 210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, in Room 201.
