Gov. Tony Evers and officials from Travel Wisconsin Thursday announced the Wisconsin State Capitol and the surrounding square are joining the “Wonders of Wisconsin.”
Launched in 2023, the Wonders of Wisconsin are Travel Wisconsin’s list of unforgettable destinations — both natural and human-made — that visitors and residents are encouraged to experience.
With the announcement, the state Capitol, its surrounding grounds and square become the 12th Wonder of Wisconsin. Other such wonders include the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay and Lambeau Field.
“As governor and as a lifelong Wisconsinite, I’ve proudly been to many of the Wonders of Wisconsin, and each one will leave you with a sense of awe and pride in our home state, and nowhere better is that sentiment shared than right here at our State Capitol,” Evers said in a press release.
Completed in 1917, the Capitol is known for its architecture and design and offers free tours to visitors. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 2001.
The surrounding Capitol Square is home to popular events like the Dane County Farmers’ Market, summertime Concerts on the Square and annual Art Fair on the Square, among other festivities.
In addition to the Capitol, Lambeau, the Apostle Islands and Yerkes Observatory, the state wonders include Devil’s Lake State Park, Eagle Tower, Grandad Bluff, Kohler-Andrae State Park, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Taliesin, Willow Falls and Witches Gulch.
