WEC Energy Group is pondering another hyperscale data center project, but first it wants to get its megawatts in a row, according to an Oct. 29 report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

During an Oct. 29 earnings call, WEC Energy Group, parent company of We Energies and the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, said it’s in discussions with a data center operator for a new 400-megawatt project.

The project is not an expansion to one of the existing data center projects in WEC Energy Group’s coverage area, which are located in Mount Pleasant and Port Washington.

No details were made public on the proposed location, but several sites are under consideration.

And given the growing public opposition to large data center campuses, community buy-in is a prime consideration.

“You’ve got to make sure you have a community that’s excited about it and interested in it,” WEC Energy Group CEO Scott Lauber said during the earnings call. “You’ve got to make sure the transmission lines are available, the capacity — there’s a lot of factors going in.”
