As it works to meet increasing energy demands from large data centers, We Energies has informed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the energy utility will continue to purchase energy from the Point Beach Nuclear Plan through 2053, according to a report by Wisconsin Public Radio.

We Energies has entered into a power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy to buy most of the energy, up to 86%, from Units One and Two of the Manitowoc County facility.

The agreement will be reviewed by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

Its effect on utility rate payers is unclear, according to consumer advocates, because not enough is known about how they will be protected from cost increases.
