With food insecurity reaching new heights, WayForward Resources will welcome a semi-truck full of food Wednesday as Hunger Action Month gets underway.
The organization said in a press release the truck will bring up to 35,000 pounds of food, donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to its Middleton facility.
Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held each September to raise awareness about hunger and the need to address food insecurity.
According to WayForward, 12.6% of Dane County residents face food insecurity, which is the highest percentage recorded since tracking began in 2011.
The organization reports demand at its food pantry has increased to the point where it provides the equivalent of approximately 133,000 meals each month. That’s about 3.5 times more than it provided five years ago.
Members of the community can participate in Hunger Action Month by organizing a food drive or donating food from their local food pantry’s wish list.
WayForward will hold a program on food insecurity on Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the Middleton Public Library, 7425 Hubbard Ave.
