U.S. stock indexes were mixed Friday as Wall Street ends an up and down week that saw increased interest rates and more upward pressure on energy prices caused by the U.S.-Iran war, according to a report by the Associated Press.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 139 points, of 0.3%, as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time, the Nasdaq composite was 0.3% higher and the S&P 500 was nearly unchanged in early trading.
The majority of stocks fell due to rising pressure from the bond market as the yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 4.98% from 4.94% late Thursday.
That yield topped the 5% level early this week for the first time since 2023.
Higher bond yields, which are linked to stubbornly high inflation, tend to slow down the economy because they make borrowing more expensive for mortgages, consumer loans and business borrowing.
Earlier this week, the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil reached $110, up from about $70 in July.
