College students throughout Wisconsin could get a break on their tuition bills for at least the next two years after the UW Board of Regents approved $730 million operating budget and $2 billion capital budget proposals submitted by the Universities of Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that a two-year tuition freeze was part of the UW’s operating budget request, and the capital budget includes plans to build UW-Madison’s first dormitory in more than 10 years.
The Legislature and Tony Evers’ successor as governor will still have to negotiate the final UW budget as part of the 2027-29 state budget, which will be finalized next summer.
Under the capital budget, UW-Madison’s aging Mosse Humanities Building would be demolished, but renovations to other buildings would be made throughout the UW system.
