University of Wisconsin Board of Regents President Kyle Weatherly and UW system Interim President Renee Wachter on Monday announced a 4-Year Tuition Pledge, which promises to freeze tuition at Wisconsin’s public university system for the 2027-29 biennium if the Legislature invests $190 million in the UW, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
The UW campuses would also cap tuition at the rate of inflation for two years following the tuition freeze, under the plan.
Weatherly said it would be difficult to not increase tuition in 2027 if the Legislature and Wisconsin’s next governor do not commit to the $190 million investment during budget negotiations this fall.Â
The news follows the fourth consecutive annual hike across UW, after the Board of Regents this June approved a 2% in-state undergraduate tuition increase and a 3.5% average fee increase for the 2026-27 academic year.
