Diesel gasoline prices reached another record on Friday, moving past $6 a gallon on average and threatening to put more upward pressure on the price of consumer goods, according to a report from the Associated Press.
The motor club AAA said the new national average of $6.05 per gallon is up from $5.85 last week and $3.70 this time last year.
Diesel fuel is used for many freight and delivery networks and higher diesel prices mean more expensive transportation will increase the cost of production for a long list of everyday goods.
Even before the most recent price increase, businesses have passed these costs to consumers in grocery and retail stores and with added fees for online orders.
Prices for diesel and regular gasoline, which reached $4.29 on average on Friday, are influenced by rising costs of both Brent crude oil, the international standard, and American crude.
For the first time in several weeks, both varieties of crude exceed $100 per barrel. Economists attribute the higher costs to the escalating war between the U.S. and Iran.
