The U.S. and Canada are in talks to reach a truce on tariffs before U.S. President Donald Trump’s 12:01 a.m. deadline on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.
If negotiations yield no deal, Trump said he will impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Despite decades of delicate discussions over trade between the two nations, the U.S. and Canada have remained allies and trading partners. Nearly $2 billion dollars’ worth of goods cross the 5,525-mile U.S.-Canadian border each day.
Nearly 72% of Canadian goods exports last year went to the United States.
